Objectius

Subject abstract

Laboratory for innovative architects (Bjarke Ingels, Lundgaard & Tranberg, etc.) named “Best Design City” in 2008, “Most Livable City” in 2013, and awarded as a city for this year’s “European Public Space”, Copenhagen is a pioneer in architectural and city design. Beyond offering incredible contemporary architecture, Copenhagen’s influence by prominent urbanists (Jan Gehl) has promoted cutting-edge urbanism policies in Europe, regulating how building and city meet, to improve urban life.

The course will point out the urban condition of architecture –both residential and civic- and the relationships between architecture, public space and public life. Copenhagen provides unique opportunities to critically compare these qualities in urban extension projects (Ørestad district), urban renewal projects in industrial precincts (Carlsberg District) and urban water edges (the Harbors). We will especially focus the attention on the transition between public -collective-private space at the city’s ground floor, at the articulation between architecture and urban space at a human scale.

The course instead of being taught in a traditional class setting will have Copenhagen as a course’s living classroom as a travelling workshop. The students will organize and pay for the trip to Copenhagen by themselves, as well as the city public transportation ticket, food and accommodation in the city. Relatively centric accommodation is encouraged for the good functioning of the workshop.

Previous to the course, the student should at least be familiar with a specific urban project as a case study to be presented to the rest of the class. Using hand sketching, digital drawing and photography, students will document and produce an analytical, graphic representation and thoughtful verbal/written reflection of the qualities of Copenhagen’s urban space and architecture through specific case studies. Emphasis will be placed on abstracting into diagrams and personal cartographies how architecture influences and is influenced by the larger scale of the city to create qualitative urban life. A parallelism and critical comparison between Copenhagen and Barcelona, its strategies and urban projects, will be enhanced.

The goal of the course is to promote sensitivity to the urban dimensions of architecture and awareness to contemporary city transformation strategies and provide students with multidisciplinary and trans-scalar design guidance that leads to the design of a more integrated physical environment.
