Workshop: THINKING AND BUILDING IN CRITICAL TIMES

We are pleased to inform you about the Workshop "Thinking and Building in critical times" organized by Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona – UPC

The workshop Thinking and Building in Critical Times, aims to generate discussion about the future of architecture in times of crisis and change under the guidance of the school of architecture Escola Técnica Superior d'Arquitectura de Barcelona (UPC).

The studies will be held between Barcelona and Mallorca based on theoretical observations and practical case studies. The practical exercise consists of developing a team proposal for the new Access Pavillion for the archaeological park Puig de Sa Morisca in Calvià (Mallorca).Taking advantage of the constantly changing, dynamic, confrontational nature and enriching cultural traditions that make up Barcelona we will study how to translate this to the island location. Seeing the archeology as a symbol of the past which we can learn from for future endeavours.

Course Description

The project is a pavilion, with an area of 200 square meters, intended to be the gateway to the archaeological park of Puig de Sa Morisca in the Mallorcan town of Calvia, is the platform where you bring into play the theoretical parameters exposed.

It will begin with an introduction of two days in Barcelona, first making contact with the workshop programme, including visits to two iconic pavilions, the entrance to the Finca Güell in Pedralbes bu Gaudi and the Barcelona Pavilion by Mies van der Rohe. Following is the visit to Mallorca for three days. Here, first starting with a tour of the archaeological park and making contact with the extraordinary landscape of the Serra de Tramuntana descending to the Mediterranean. Alongside the idea of a landscape we will study the sense of place: the Cathedral of Palma, Utzon Foundation and the Joan Miró Foundation, will serve as precedents.

The workshop continues in Barcelona, working with workshop sessions in the mornings and evenings devoted to the presentation and discussion by specialists in various fields: building models, energy efficiency discussions, networking and internationalization in architecture and examples of temporary / transitional spaces and the restoring of existing structures as future strategies.

Project Completed with presentation of pavilion in public followed by publication of the work done during the Workshop.
