La asignatura trata de llevar a cabo una exploración crítica de las condiciones socio-culturales, antropológicas, políticas y la realidad espacial en las que operan la arquitectura y el urbanismo hoy, así como los procedimientos y estrategias contemporáneas de éstas y otras disciplinas espaciales.

La preocupación subyacente y motivante de la asignatura es la constatación de la pérdida de ímpetu social, crítico, político e incluso utópico de la arquitectura contemporánea, y en general, del debate asociado a ella. Ante la aceptación generalizada de mecanismos de acción y producción que se alinean con el capital y el mercado, cabe preguntarse por vías alternativas de acción que permitan acercarse a la dimensión política de la arquitectura.

Una convicción de que el mundo de las artes visuales y en especial de la producción cinematográfica ofrece interesantes formas alternativas de crítica espacial y/o propuestas de acción/intervención, conduce a proponer una serie de proyecciones a modo de mirada alternativa a la ciudad, y a los temas, teorías y reflexiones explorados en las clases. Todo ello con el objetivo de suscitar reflexiones y/o abrir puertas a la apropiación de mecanismos subversivos, susceptibles de ser aplicados transdisciplinarmente.

Desde esta posición reflexiva, un tanto incómoda, se espera que el estudiante “reaccione”, y proponga su propio ejercicio de análisis crítico, comparando, profundizando, relacionando o deconstruyendo alguno de los temas propuestos.

El curso tendrá como tema de fondo las relaciones de los términos “el otro” y “coexistencia” considerados con el fin de repensar el papel de la arquitectura en la producción de espacios para vivir y para estar juntos.

The course tries to explore the contemporary condition and spatial reality on which architects operate broadening the view and fostering critical reflection about aspects of society that are paramount but nonetheless too often taken for granted… sociologists, anthropologists, philosophers, artists, film-makers, thinkers, have understood many of these crucial aspects of our cities and our lives in a way that seems at least interesting to analyze if not absolutely essential for an architect.

The verification of a great loss of social, critical, political and even utopian impetus in the contemporary debate and production of architecture is the underlying and motivating concern of the course. Upon generalized, common acceptance of action and production mechanisms that follow those of capitalism and the market, one must search for alternative ways to advance towards a political dimension of architecture.

On the basis of already successful explorations of such alternative ways, conducted in the fields of visual arts and cinema, the course tries to offer a double insight and includes a series of film projections as an alternative look at the city and at the issues, theories and reflections explored in the classes. The aim is to foster debate and reflection, opening windows to the appropriation of subversive mechanisms that may be applicable in a trans-disciplinary way.

From such a reflective, somehow uncomfortable position, students should “react”, formulating their own assignments (exercises) in the form of a critical analysis, comparing, deepening, relating or de-constructing one or more of the themes explored in the course.

The course will be developed on the basis of the interplays of the notions of “the other” and “coexistence” considered to rethink the role of architecture in the production of spaces for being and living together.

* Se plantea una asignatura intensiva en 2 fases bien diferenciadas: una primera semana de sesiones conjuntas con clases teóricas+conferencias invitadas+proyecciones+debates en horario de mañana y tarde; una segunda semana en formato taller-seminario de lectura y escritura académica crítica en pequeños grupos de 3 estudiantes con dos sesiones de 2 horas por grupo, y una sesión final de presentaciones.

* La intención es que la primera fase tome forma de seminario intensivo internacional con la presencia de 5 invitados/as aún por confirmar.

* La asignatura se impartirá íntegramente en inglés. Se valorará positivamente que los textos del taller de escritura se escriban también inglés, aunque será posible hacerlo en otros idiomas.

* The course is conceived as an intensive program in 2 well-diferentiated stages: the first week will host collective sessions including (main lecture + guest lecture+questions) + (screening + debate) scheduled from 10.00h to 14.00h and from 16.00h to 20.00h respectively; the second week will take the shape of a critical writing and reading seminar in small groups of 3 students including 2-hour reviews twice per group and a final session for presentations and debate.

*The idea is that the first stage of the course takes shape as an international intensive seminar with the presence of 5 guests to be announced.
*The course will be taught in English. Critical Essays in English resulting from the critical writing seminar will be encouraged and appreciated although other languages will be accepted too.
