City and Memory: Public Space, Art, Activism, Politics and Community (intensiva)
Codi UPC: 290283
Based on a first settling of ideas at the beginning of the workshop, three major trains of thought seek to address contemporary questions and approaches of interpreting, assessing and designing public spaces related to the immediate physical or collective urban memory: first, ideological, political and nation-related concepts; second, social and cultural aspects and their tracing back in an ethnographic approach; and, third, spatial, territorial, architectural and urbanistic aspects.
Spatial concepts to work on will be “Working on the voids of history”, “Articulating the destruction of the collective memory”, “Transforming the memory into urban space with political symbolism”, “Giving shape to historical space” and others.
Analytical site visits within the city of Barcelona to Spaces of Memory (such as Fossar de la
Pedrera, Fossar de les Moreres, Plaça de les Dones del 36 and Passeig dels Cims) and Spaces of No-Memory (such as el Camp de la Bota, today known as Plaça del Fòrum) might help to enhance a discourse and to understand how a city with its specific history and political background celebrates or emphasizes in different ways certain memories on the one side, whereas others are deliberatlely extinguished by urbanistic interventions.
