The Department of Architectural Design has three UPC-recognized research groups. Two of them are also recognized as consolidated research groups by the Catalan Government’s Agency for the Administration of University and Research Grants (AGAUR) and, as such, are authorized to conduct research that bridges the knowledge gap between universities and civil society. Specific projects are carried out through collaboration agreements and other programs with national and international public administrations, such as UNESCO, the European Union, ministries, regional government departments, city and regional councils, professional associations, foundations, groups and associations, and individuals and companies. Local and international exhibits and conferences are a regular feature of the Department’s annual activities.

The Department also hosts cultural events such as lecture series, exhibitions, seminars and round tables, and it helps organize similar events hosted by other schools and institutions. It also publishes the journals DPA and Arquitectònics, as well as a book series by the Forma Moderna research group.

The Vallès section of the department  is responsible for teaching the subjects within Architectural Design  in ETSAV studies.
